This is a prayer seeking forgiveness. By reciting this we are saying:

"If I have done any wrong, with my hands or my feet, by my words or my deeds, through my hearing or through my sight, or just even in my thoughts; if I have erred in any way in the performance of my duties, I beseech you to forgive me Lord Shiva, for you are the embodiment of mercy."

This is a wonderful night-time prayer to say, and to teach to children. We can use this as an opportunity to reflect upon our day, our deeds and our words, and to talk to our children about how we (they) may have, knowingly or unknowingly, hurt someone's feelings during the day and how we (they) can avoid doing so in future.

This prayer is commonly chanted in Hindu Temples, after the Aarthi, and is therefore a good one to get familiar with.

Sincerely,
Meera Sharma
