Shubham karoti kalyanam: Prayer to the Lamp - traditional tune

Diya, deep, deepak, jyoti, jyoth, valakku - The traditional pooja lamp has many names. It is a symbol of auspiciousness and hence lighting of the lamp is a very important part of any pooja or inauguration of an event. Today's shloka is dedicated to the lamp.

shubham karoti kalyaanam
aarogyam dhana sampadaa
shatru buddhi vinaashaaya
deepa jyothir namostute

शुभम् करोति  कल्याणम्
आरोग्यं धन सम्पदः
शत्रुबुद्धि विनाशाय
दीपज्योतिर् नमोस्तुते

Meaning: May the lamp usher in all that is auspicious, and bless us with good health and prosperity.

shatru buddhi vinaashaaya: This line maybe interpreted in two ways -
1.May the light from this lamp remove the darkness of ignorance which is the enemy of knowledge.
2. May this light destroy the maleficent intellect of enemies.

To this light, the harbinger of all things good and auspicious, I offer my salutations.

An extended version of this shloka with the word 'sandhya' in it, meaning 'evening', is recited while lighting the lamp at dusk, the time when the light of day is fading and the darkness of night is about to surround us.
I, however, recite the abbreviated version given here, whenever I light a pooja lamp.
